A lip-reading expert has offered fresh insights into Pep Guardiola’s heated interaction with goalkeeper Stefan Ortega following Manchester City’s 2-2 draw with Brentford on Tuesday night.
Manchester City looked set for a comfortable victory after Phil Foden’s brace put the Premier League champions 2-0 up. However, a late comeback from Brentford, with goals from Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard, saw the match end in a disappointing draw for City.
Despite facing a team with the second-best home record in the league, Guardiola was visibly frustrated after his team’s collapse in the final 10 minutes.

Guardiola was seen in animated discussions with Josko Gvardiol and Stefan Ortega at full-time. While initially appearing confrontational, Guardiola later clarified in his post-match interview that the exchanges were positive.
“How good he (Gvardiol) played. He played an incredible game. We talked about one action but it’s the same with Ortega – I said how good he played, how good he passed to Erling, how satisfied I am with especially these two players.”
However, Daily Mail’s lip-reading expert Jeremy Freeman suggested that Guardiola told Ortega he should have “taken that yellow” – implying that the manager wanted Ortega to slow the game down by time-wasting, even at the cost of a yellow card.
City’s inability to manage the clock contributed to Brentford’s stoppage-time equalizer.
Foden’s Fatigue Admission and Guardiola’s Response
After the match, Phil Foden attributed City’s struggles to fatigue:
“We just looked tired at the end, the last 20 minutes. We looked a bit leggy, they put the pressure on and put the ball into the box. I don’t think we coped with the physicality at the end,” Foden told TNT Sports.
Guardiola responded by acknowledging the team’s lack of sharpness, singling out Foden as one of the players affected:
“That’s why I replaced him,” Guardiola remarked during his post-match press conference.
