At the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season, Manchester City fans hoped for a fifth straight title. However, halfway through the season, things are not going as planned. City is currently in sixth place, far behind league leaders Liverpool, managed by Arne Slot.
City has already lost six matches this season, and their title chances are slipping away. Injuries to key players like Rodri, John Stones, and Nathan Ake have made it harder, but many believe City should still be performing better with the talent they have.
Ilkay Gundogan, who left for Barcelona after the 2022/23 season, is a shadow of his former self. Back then, he was crucial for City, scoring eight goals and assisting five times in his last league season. Now 34 years old, Gundogan is linked with Galatasaray. City wouldn’t mind letting him go, especially with his £230k-a-week salary off the books.

Jack Grealish, who joined City for £100m in 2021, hasn’t lived up to expectations. While he was a standout player at Aston Villa, he has struggled to make a big impact at City. This season, he has managed just one assist in 14 games and has lost his place in the starting lineup to younger players like Savinho.
Pep Guardiola recently praised Savinho, saying he is in “better shape” than Grealish, signaling that the English midfielder’s role at the club is fading. Despite earning £300k per week, Grealish has not delivered enough, raising questions about his future at City.
Manchester City has one of the highest wage bills in the league. Kevin De Bruyne (£400k/week) and Erling Haaland (£375k/week) are the top earners. Grealish is third, earning the same as Bernardo Silva, even though he is no longer a key player. Meanwhile, players like Phil Foden and Rodri, who are performing better, earn less.
At this point, the best option might be for Grealish to leave City this January. Selling him would reduce the wage bill and give him a fresh start at another club. Sometimes, big moves don’t work out, and it seems like Grealish needs a new environment to rediscover his best form.
