Manchester City were very close to signing Sander Berge from Burnley before he completed his £25 million transfer to Fulham, reports have now revealed that the Norwegian international was seen as a potential back-up to Rodri in Etihad Stadium, journalist Duncan Castles claims.

It was an impressive performance by Berge for Burnley last time around that came with some strong recommendations from Erling Haaland and ex-coach Vincent Kompany that tempted City. Though the Citizens have now resolved to re-sign Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona.

Reports also suggest that Erik ten Hag was also interested in his services at Manchester United, but in the end, Fulham outbid them for Berge. But anyway, the versatility and defensive talent of the 26-year-old would have come in useful for both teams.

Although City may have lost a very good talent, they had already made up for this in midfield with the coming back of Gundogan. His experience and class will be very important as Guardiola looks to defend the Premier League title.

On the other hand, Berge hopes to make an immediate impact at Fulham. Fulham have big goals for this upcoming season and will look toward the Norwegian to help them in achieving these goals.
