Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega admits his contribution to the costly error which saw Manchester United’s first goal go in at the FA Cup final. Already in a starring role all through his first season at Etihad Stadium, the German goalkeeper found himself on the wrong end of controversy after a mix-up with defender Josko Gvardiol which allowed Alejandro Garnacho to open the scoring for United.
Ortega shed more light on the incident during an interview ahead of the Community Shield clash between the two Manchester giants.
“It’s hard if an opponent just plays long balls. And we always have a high line. If you have to defend 20 balls and it happens once, one ball is dangerous.

“In this case, I shouted to Josko, maybe not too loud, so he didn’t hear me. It just happens in football, no more than that
It was a mistake which overshadowed what had otherwise been an impressive campaign from Ortega, who played a big role in City’s Premier League title win.
Gvardiol has already taken responsibility for his role in the error, insisting that greater communication would have prevented the goal.
In a week’s time, Ortega will have the opportunity to forget all about the FA Cup final with the Community Shield. He could not have a better start to the new season, winning against United and erasing the memory of that fateful day at Wembley.
